India’s telecom sector is witnessing a fresh debate over internet fairness after Bharti Airtel introduced its “Priority Postpaid” service for premium subscribers. The company says the offering is designed to provide smoother connectivity, faster speeds, and reduced congestion during peak usage periods through 5G network slicing technology.
While Airtel maintains that the service complies with India’s net neutrality regulations and does not deliberately slow down other users, the launch has raised concerns among policy observers and regulators. Critics argue that prioritizing one category of users could eventually lead to “VIP internet lanes,” potentially affecting equal access to mobile internet services.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and TRAI are reportedly examining the matter closely, making the development one of the most discussed topics in India’s telecom industry this week.
