The West Bengal government has announced that it will remove the controversial football-themed sculpture outside the iconic Salt Lake Stadium, a structure originally designed during the tenure of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
State Sports Minister Nisith Pramanik made the announcement after the Indian Super League Kolkata derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
Pramanik criticised the design of the sculpture and said the structure would soon be dismantled as part of broader modernization plans for the stadium complex.
The minister also announced a series of infrastructure upgrades at Salt Lake Stadium, one of India’s most historic football venues, aimed at improving facilities for fans, players, and international sporting events.
The football-themed installation had drawn mixed reactions since its unveiling, with supporters calling it symbolic of Bengal’s football culture while critics questioned its design and public spending.
