Rising GE F414 Engine Costs Pose Fresh Challenge to India’s AMCA Fighter Jet Program

India’s indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program is reportedly facing a major hurdle after the cost of GE’s F414 engines surged significantly, prompting concerns over project budgets, timelines, and potential alternative engine partnerships.
Rising GE F414 Engine Costs Pose Fresh Challenge to India’s AMCA Fighter Jet Program
India’s ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program has reportedly encountered a fresh challenge as negotiations over the procurement and production of GE F414 engines face significant cost-related obstacles.

According to sources, the price of each F414 engine has risen sharply from earlier estimates of around ₹70–80 crore to nearly ₹200 crore per engine. The reported increase has sparked concerns within the defense establishment regarding the financial viability and timeline of the country’s flagship fifth-generation fighter aircraft project.

The AMCA, being developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and its associated agencies, is expected to serve as India’s first indigenous stealth fighter aircraft. The project requires multiple prototypes for testing and validation before entering production.

With engine costs reportedly escalating, officials are said to be examining alternative options, including exploring collaborations with other international engine manufacturers. Any shift in engine partnerships could potentially affect the development schedule, certification process, and overall roadmap of the AMCA program.

The GE F414 engine has long been considered the preferred powerplant for the initial variants of the aircraft due to its proven performance and existing operational history in several advanced fighter platforms worldwide.

Defense analysts note that while indigenous development remains the long-term objective, securing a reliable engine solution is critical to maintaining momentum in the AMCA program and achieving India’s broader goals of defense self-reliance and advanced aerospace capability.

The AMCA project is regarded as one of India’s most strategically important defense initiatives, aimed at strengthening the Indian Air Force’s future combat capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign fighter aircraft platforms.
