The Jammu and Kashmir Government has initiated disciplinary proceedings against a cardiologist at Government Medical College Anantnag after an anti-fraud investigation uncovered alleged irregularities in cardiac procedures performed under the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY/SEHAT scheme.
An audit found that 27 of 55 reviewed patients (49%) who underwent the specialized Left Bundle Branch Area Pacing (LBBAP) procedure reportedly had normal heart function and may not have required the treatment. Investigators also alleged that 103 cases were claimed under a pacemaker implantation package, while records indicated a different procedure had been performed.
The probe further found allegations of beneficiaries being forced to make out-of-pocket payments despite the scheme’s cashless treatment mandate. One patient reportedly paid ₹70,000 for a procedure. Authorities have also raised concerns over procurement irregularities, missing inventory records, and lack of required approvals for certain medical devices.
Based on the findings, the Health and Medical Education Department has issued a formal charge notice to the doctor and given seven days to respond. Further disciplinary action will depend on the outcome of the inquiry and the doctor’s defense.
