Russia and China have moved to strengthen their strategic partnership by signing multiple new agreements focused heavily on energy cooperation during high-level talks in Beijing between Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.
The agreements come at a time when the ongoing Iran war has severely disrupted global energy markets, increased oil and gas prices and intensified concerns over supply security, especially around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
One major focus of the talks is believed to be the long-delayed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline project, which would significantly expand Russian gas exports to China. Analysts say the energy crisis triggered by the Iran conflict has given Moscow stronger leverage in negotiations with Beijing.
For Putin, deeper energy ties with China provide a crucial economic lifeline as Russia continues to face Western sanctions and growing isolation from European energy markets. China, meanwhile, gains access to stable long-term energy supplies at a time of heightened global uncertainty.
The development could also complicate strategic calculations for Donald Trump, whose administration has been trying to maintain pressure on both Moscow and Tehran while also seeking Chinese cooperation to stabilise energy markets and reopen global trade routes.
Geopolitical analysts view the latest agreements as part of a broader shift toward a more multipolar global order, where Russia and China increasingly coordinate economic and strategic interests in response to US-led influence.
